Tonight, we’re here with Lily from Dead Meat Designs.
With Dead Meat Designs, you make creepy pop-horror stuff. Tell us a little about what you make.
I make dark and creepy arts and crafts with a sense of humor, from many types of materials. I make everything! I’ve taught myself how to do too many things. I just love the process of learning to do and create odd and simple art. As a result, Dead Meat Designs offers items from brain pincushions to painted mannequins.
What drives you to make your zombie/spooky/brainy stuff?
The odd, creepy, strange, macabre, gross, ridiculous, crazy, weird stuff that life has to offer make me laugh and inspire my art. My fascination with the darker side of life comes out in my work. Plus blood, brains, zombies, and creepy stuff just look cool.
Are you bringing anything specific to Keen Halloween?
Blood, brains, zombies, and creepy stuff.
Do you get into Halloween? What do you like about it?
And how!! Halloween season is the favorite time of year around my house. We don’t decorate our house for Halloween because the inside looks like Halloween year round. Every year I take Halloween day off work. I usually spend a lot of time and effort making my daughters’ costumes. I love when the Halloween stuff hits the stores. I never tire of plastic eyeballs and fake spiders!
What’s the coolest trick-er-treat costume you ever had as a kid?
In grade school my mom took a break from making my costumes and let me pick out a store bought one. I was so very excited. Heathcliff was my choice and it was the coolest. As an adult, I appreciate the effort and imagination my mom put into all the wonderful costumes she made me over the years.
Do you have a favorite spooky tv show/movie that you like?
My favorite spooky show to watch is The Munsters. It’s both funny and kid friendly.
You collect Mannequin heads? Surely this doesn’t come from the movie Mannequin! How many do you have? What do you do with them?
I collect mannequin heads, full bodies, and parts. Thirteen years ago I found a 12-year-old (according to her label) girl mannequin for cheap in a thrift store and had to have her. It all began with her. My friends have given me torsos that were bound for the garbage and I’ve found a ton of various mannequins and parts in thrift stores, yard sales, and going out of business sales over the years. I have so many mannequins and wig forms to count! Here goes: 3 full size mannequins, torsos, 15 half torsos, 5 pairs of women’s styrofoam legs, 1 pair of men’s legs, and 17 wig forms/beauty school heads.
This odd collection is displayed around my house, of course. I paint them mostly. One of the full size ones has been made into a lamp by my girlfriend. Some are used to display jewelry. Currently I’m working on a commission to paint a full size mannequin as a bikini wearing zombie girl. She will become a lamp as well.
Who would make a better date?: Morticia or Lily Munster?
Morticia is way hotter but, Lily Munster would be more fun. She seems sillier, I like silly.
We’d like to thank Lily for letting us interview her tonight.
